I started looking into the Junior League here, because I’ve been wanting to get involved and do…something.
I know someone who is/was a member (haven’t talk to her in a while) and that’s what made me think of it.
However.
I went to check out their website, and they have a page where they list all the presidents’ names, starting from when it was started in 1931. I saw that is was listed like this:
Sally M. Jones aka Mrs. Harvey Jones
And that goes on up until the 2000s!!!!
It immediately made me suspicious of a women’s organization that would refer to their presidents as Mrs. Husband’s Full Name past the 1950s or 60s.
The last 5 or 6 weren’t listed that way, but I don’t know if that was a change in policy, or if the last few presidents weren’t married.
It seems like they do good work, and I’d like to be involved, but I worry that maybe I’m too much of a liberal to work within this particular organization.
ETA: I just quickly looked up the sites of a few different League’s in other states, and so far none of those have their leadership history listed with Mrs. Husband’s Name. So I guess this is just a local issue or something?
